What do you know about the surface treatment of precision CNC machining parts?

What is metal finishing? A lot of people think of surface treatment, they may just think of it as an aesthetic finish like paint and powder coating to make parts look better and change color. Surface treatment is used to treat the exterior of a metal product by applying a thin complementary layer to the surface of the metal product. There are different types of metal finishing processes used for different purposes. In this news, we'll review some things to know about the types of metal surface treatment.

1. Anodizing
Anodizing is available in Type i, Type II and Type III. Anodizing is an electrolytic passivation process used to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer on the surface of aluminum parts. The aluminum parts are anodes (hence the name "anodizing"), and an electric current is passed between them and the cathode (usually a flat aluminum rod) through the aforementioned electrolyte (most commonly sulfuric acid). The main function of anodizing is to increase corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance, adhesion to paints and primers, etc.

2. Metal plating
Metal plating is a technique in which a chemical bath is used to coat or alter the surface of a substrate with a thin layer of metal such as PTFE or nickel. Electroplating techniques generate an electrical current to diffuse the substrate, while electroless plating employs the practice of autocatalysis, where the substrate acts as a catalyst in a reaction. It offers many advantages such as improved product durability, corrosion resistance, surface friction and appearance. In addition to this, it is also a useful option for coating other metals.

3. Electroless Plating
The process involves applying a uniform layer of metal to the substrate without the need for an electrical charge. Nickel is often used for this process because it provides a uniform thickness on the substrate, even on irregularly shaped objects. Electroless plating is an important process to improve corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance and wear resistance.

4. Passivation
It is a process used to improve the surface condition of stainless steel by dissolving iron embedded in the surface by forming, machining or other manufacturing steps. This is achieved by placing the stainless steel in an acid solution to dissolve the residual iron and form a thin oxide layer on the surface. It improves corrosion resistance and maintains the dimensional integrity of tight tolerance parts.

5. Powder coating
Powder coating involves melting dry plastic powder onto metal to create a textured, matte or glossy coating. It electrostatically applies powder to metal, which is then cured under heat, allowing it to flow and form a hard "skin".

6. Hot black
This is a process that involves using a machine to apply a thin layer of black oxide to the surface of the product to create a matte black finish with high abrasion resistance. Thermal blackening is a high temperature process in which the product is inserted into a series of tanks containing corrosives, cleaning agents and coolants.
